The Jadez Story

Jadez was born in the wild mountains and lakes of New Zealand where its colours and shapes were taken from the landscape that created them. Jadewood is a truly New Zealand inspired range of jewellery that can boast to having no two pieces the same with different shapes, colours and textures combining to make every piece a unique work of art. The combination of Jade and foraged woods mixed with vibrant translucent colours provides a recipe for beautiful jewellery that will last through time.

Living and working in the heart of New Zealands best landscape

It's hard not to be inspired when you live only a short distance away from the most magnificent scenery of tall snow peaked mountains and wild rivers running through pristine native bush.

Mike and his partner Catherine are living the dream and building their own home on the side of a mountain range in Central Otago New Zealand.

Mike is a designer and artist and many describe their home that was featured on Grand Designs New Zealand, as a grand sculpture .

Jadez takes time

Jadez starts its journey with beautifully aged timbers foraged from beaches and mountains, that display rugged character and a unique story. The timbers undergo a long process of drying and preserving with a special resin infusion mixed with Jade powder that stabilizes the timber ready for adding the colours and designs. The process enhances the grain as well as hardening the wood so it can be polished smooth after it is carved.

The translucent colours and luminescent minerals produce unique patterns and textures that are inspired by the aqua blue streams and luminous mosses of nature. Jade, from the rugged west coast, adds a subtle sparkle as well as empowering the piece of jewellery with Jade’s spiritual qualities and native belonging.

Mike shares a big workshop and Studio with his partner Catherine who helps out by building point of sale displays from recycled Rimu colected from her families farm. Catherine is cabinet maker by trade but an artist who also loves to work with native timbers. Mike designs and creates different collections of pendants, rings and earrings in both traditional and contemporary shapes. Individual designs for specific locations are made to reflect their local story.
